Royale Pass
Climb the tiers, claim the spoils, and let the Kingdom see your name in gold.
Royale Pass is the seasonal progression system at the heart of Clash Royale's live-service rhythm. Each season, players climb a tiered ladder of rewards by earning Experience Points through matches, quests, and daily activities. The pass splits into a Free track available to every player and a Premium track unlocked by a one-time purchase, with an additional Max tier offering the most lavish cosmetics and card bundles.
It serves as the game's primary long-term incentive: a structured, time-boxed journey that gives players a clear goal beyond simply reaching a higher arena. The pass reshapes what a 'season' means in the Kingdom, turning weeks of grinding into a narrative of escalating spoils, from humble elixir vials to exclusive arena skins and legendary card variants.

Lore & Background
In the oral histories of the Arena, the Royale Pass is spoken of as a covenant between the players and the Crown. Each season, a new scroll unfurls at the gates of the Colosseum, listing the rewards that await those who prove their worth in battle. The Free track is open to all—any warrior who steps onto the field may claim their share of elixir and cards. But the Premium and Max tracks are reserved for those who pledge a token of allegiance to the Crown, earning access to rarer treasures: emotes that make the crowd roar, card skins that shimmer like enchanted steel, and arena backdrops that transform the very battlefield.
The system was born from a simple observation by the Keepers of the Arena: players needed a reason to return week after week, not merely to climb arenas but to complete a journey. The Pass gave them that arc—a beginning, a middle filled with steady gains, and a triumphant finale at the top tier where the most coveted rewards wait. It turned the endless grind into a story with a denouement.
Seasons come and go, and with each reset the scroll is burned and a new one unrolled. What was earned remains in the player's collection, but the path itself must be walked again. This is, the lore suggests, the Crown's way of ensuring that no single season's glory becomes stale, that every warrior must earn their place anew.
In Their Own Story
The arena lights dimmed to a warm amber as the new season's scroll unfurled across the Colosseum floor. Kael, a veteran of forty-three seasons, watched the tier list scroll past—familiar names, new skins, that one emote he'd been eyeing since last season. His thumb hovered over the Premium button. Around him, the crowd murmured. The Free track was generous enough, but the Max tier… the Max tier had a card skin that made the Knight's shield ripple like liquid gold. He'd never seen it in person. He'd seen it in a friend's collection, backlit by a phone screen in a dimly lit room, and something in his chest had ached with a want he couldn't name. He tapped. The scroll glowed. Tier one unlocked: a chest, a vial of golden elixir, a small emote of a thumbs-up. He smiled. Forty-three seasons, and the first tier still felt like a gift.
Reader's Guide
Royale Pass operates on a tiered ladder that resets at the start of each new season. Players earn XP primarily by playing matches—both 1v1 and 2v2 formats—and by completing daily and weekly quests. Each tier unlocked grants rewards on the Free track, and if the player has purchased the Premium or Max pass, additional rewards appear on the corresponding premium track at the same tier level.
The Free track typically includes a steady stream of chests, golden elixir, and occasional cards. The Premium track layers on top of this with card bundles, emotes, profile frames, and card skins. The Max tier, the highest premium option, adds the most exclusive cosmetics: special arena skins, rare card skins, and large card bundles that appear at select milestone tiers.
The pass does not expire mid-season; any XP earned before the season ends counts toward your tier progress. However, once a new season launches, the old pass is retired and all unclaimed rewards from the previous pass are lost. There is no carry-over of XP between seasons.
Players can also earn a small amount of bonus XP through special in-game events and challenges that run concurrently with the pass, giving an extra nudge toward higher tiers without requiring additional matches.
Did You Know?
- The Royale Pass replaced an earlier, simpler seasonal reward structure, introducing the now-familiar Free/Premium split that many mobile games later adopted.
- The Max tier was added as a separate, higher-priced option above the standard Premium track, giving players a third rung on the reward ladder.
- Arena skins earned through the Royale Pass alter the visual backdrop of the entire battlefield, changing how every match looks for that season.
- Because the pass resets each season, a player who reaches the top tier in one season must climb the entire ladder again the next—no tier progress carries over.
